Leo "George Washington" Brink
02/22/1922 - 11/14/2007
Dad was born in Volney, Iowa, he was the son of August Carl and Eliza Ritte
(Jones) Brink. He was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Waukon and
confirmed at West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. While growing up he went to
various country country schools and Waukon public school. As a young boy he
worked for different farmers for $25.00 a month. On June 14th, 1941 he married
Mom, Ruth Alice Ludeking at the Zalmona Presbyterian Church parsonage with
Reverend Buschman as pastor. Mom's parents had a wedding supper for the
newlyweds with a few friends and relatives in attendance Late in the evening
there was a shivaree for the couple at her parents farm. Mom and Dad operated a
snack shop on Spring Avenue for about a half a year. Dad also worked for
different farmers and in packing plants in Cedar Rapids and Dubuque. In 1944
he started farming by St. Olaf, Iowa and then in 1950 they moved to Ludlow where
they have lived ever since. I was 3 months old when they moved there. Dad was
the first can milk hauler and later had the first bulk milk route for the Ludlow
creamery. Dad enjoyed outdoor sports, fishing and duck hunting on the
Mississippi River and staying at their cabin at Harper's Ferry. Dad and Mom
enjoyed deer hunting in South Dakota and Wyoming in the fall and also visiting
Deadwood, South Dakota. They spent a few weeks in Texas each winter for a
number of years. Bowling was another sport Dad enjoyed. He had his own five
man team with his four sons and himself. He bowled in a couples league until
his health gave out. He loved his family get-togethers with all his kids,
grandkids, great grandchildren and great great grand son. Having the house full
after the church program on Christmas Eve was a very special time for Dad. I
remember my favorite Christmas was when "Santa Claus" came to our door and
brought me a red velvet skirt with a silk blouse. I felt that I was a
princess, as that was the most beautiful outfit I had ever owned. We always
got one present for Christmas, and it
